KSW

KSW is a streetwear blog hosted by the Kingston university newspaper, The River, and created by Kingston University’s Journalism graduates.

Besides sharing fashion-related news, the main purpose of KSW is to create an image of the everyday fashion and local trends in Kingston upon Thames. The KSW blog will showcase both High Street fashion and individual style in order to become a useful source of inspiration for our readers.

Screen Style Steals for Savvy Students

From glamorous reality TV stars to period drama muses, TV shows are shaping fashion like never before. Heres how to look like an extra from one of your favorite TV shows for a fraction of the price.

TV fashion Idol no.1: Lady Mary Crawley from Downton Abbey

Lady Mary from Downton Abbey

They say every trend comes back into fashion eventually, some just take a little longer than others. This blockbusting period drama, set in the roaring twenties, has seen Edwardian elegance make a return to the world of fashion. Ralph Lauren caused a stir recently by closing New York fashion week with a very English inspired collection. His models strutted the runway in tweeds, luxurious gowns and smoking jackets to the dulcet orchestral tones of the Downton Abbey theme tune.

High street shops have recently seen a surge in sales of period drama style accessories such as silk gloves and pearl necklaces. Forget showing bulging cleavage or slightly to much thigh to attract your Mathew, Downton-style seduction deals in a flash of an ankle or the whisper of lace on a velvet carpet. N.B Make sure to take inspiration only from the upstairs quarters, no ones going to pull looking like Mrs Pattmore on a Saturday night.

Here’s how to recreate the look on a student budget:

Gold Flapper Dress

Gold Flapper dress: Wallis £90

White Silk gloves: BeyondRetro.com £12

Recycled lace collar: Rokit.co.uk £20

TV Fashion Idol’s no.2: Lol and Woody from the hit TV series This is England

This gritty drama about skinhead culture in the 1980s has sparked a revival of Britain’s love affair with mod fashion. Rihanna recently took inspiration from this quintessentially British style for her music video for the song we found love in a hopeless place, in which she is seen being pushed round in trolleys, taking E’s and generally dancing around in a Belfast council estate. Well what’s good enough for Rih Rih…This glamorous androgyny is simple to pull off and easy to wear, all you need is a pear of DM’s, an oversized checked shirt and some washed out denim. And a trolley.

To recreate the look you will need:

Dungarees: From H&M £14.99

Dr. Martin boots in cherry: From www.amazon.co.uk from £60

Mod fit checked shirt: From www.stuartslondon.com £45.00

What’s your name? Tom Ward
Age? 22
Occupation? Kingston University student of Journalism
Where do you shop? I like to shop at Zara, River Island and Topman. However, I love ebay as I can always find what I’m after. I also enjoy vintage shops.
Tom easily pulls off the geek chic look by adding a pair of glasses to a basic, yet fashionable outfit. However, it’s the combination of his old school tie to go with a super chic white Yves Saint Laurent shirt that really makes this whole outfit unique. Tom’s look portrays his laid back and quirky attitude.
My style in three words…

Confused indie rocker

Glasses from superdrug, Cardigan by Zara, shirt by Yves Saint Laurent, gold colours school tie, jeans by Topman, Timberland shoes.

What’s your name? Joe Wonsberg
Age? 47
Occupation? Kingston University student of Fashion
Where do you shop? I prefer vintage shops, but I often find great pieces in high street shops.
Joe’s look definitely stands out from the crowd. The vintage look put together by exclusive vintage pieces from the 1960s like his suit, the hat and the walking stick, is nicely spiced up with a pair of red shoes. Joe has visited a lot of London Fashion Week’s catwalks and gets his inspiration from the big labels. Fashion has been his passion from a young age, and he loves being able to broaden his understanding of the subject as a fashion student at the Knight’s Park campus.
My style in three words…

Vintage, classy and smart.

What’s your name? Luke Arnett
Age? 17
Occupation? College student
Where do you shop? Topman, the Bentalls Centre, Natterjacks
No more than 17-years-old, Luke’s look showed clear signs of a style conscious personality. With his indie-looking earrings, a trendy haircut and by only buttoning his shirt around the neck, Luke’s outfit is well pulled off, and he has made it look classy and contemporaneous at the same time.

Occupation? Kingston University student of Psychology with Criminology
Where do you shop? I enjoy shopping abroad as I can find clothes that nobody else has
Ingrid caught my interest as her relaxed outfit, put together of fashionable items, was very tasteful and stood out from the crowd on London Road. Her combination of comfortable and reasonably priced pieces like the slouchy handbag and the shirt, with the glamorous-looking leather trousers, classy boots, and the last touch - a pair of Ray-Ban aviators – she completes the casual chic look without a glitch.
